Founded on seven generations of Vermont work ethic, Mountain Top Excavation, LLC is a modern company, with a historic understanding. We take the utmost pride in the quality of our work, efficiency in getting the job done, understanding of construction ethics and principles, and professionalism. At the end of the day, our reputation and relationship with our clients and the community is what matters most to us.
We have a wide range of experience in the size and scope of our projects. From artisan rock retaining walls to distinguish one’s landscape, to necessary septic system upgrades and replacements, to custom new home starts, to the development of brand new communities, we have the skills, equipment, and can-do attitude to accommodate our client’s needs.

HISTORY
Geographically, Vermont is not the largest state, but what it lacks in size, it sure makes up for in character and culture. Growing up in the Green Mountain state, Zach Fenn was exposed to and encouraged to develop to a diverse set of skills. As a young boy, he worked alongside his grandparents on the family dairy farm, no doubt learning the importance of routine, precision, and punctuality. And, as he grew into a young man and teenager, he was taught by his father, who just so happened to be a foreman for the Green Mountain Boys F16 Fleet, to maintain and repair the toys he loved to play—primarily dirt bikes and snowmobiles. Skiing, mountain biking, and pretty much anything that involved the top of a mountain, also captivated young Zach. But, if one thing was for certain—Zach loved heavy equipment. Developing from the little boy playing in the field with his Tonka toys to the present, owner and operator of Mountain Top Excavation, Zach has a passion for transforming the land into something with purpose and function, but also for aesthesis and longevity.
In his early 20’s, after meeting his future wife while skiing at the Middlebury College Snow Bowl, he and his bride-to-be moved west to Lake Tahoe, California to devote themselves to the skiing and mountain biking lifestyle, while their bodies were young and their responsibilities minimal. At the time, Lake Tahoe was experiencing a massive construction boom, which Zach quickly got wrapped up. The skills that Zach developed while in Tahoe were diverse—from custom concrete, carpentry, the excavation of numerous custom home sites in the most prestigious of Tahoe/Truckee communities, to earning his California Water Treatment & Distribution certifications in order to excavate, repair, and install new drinking water infrastructure. Zach can confidently say, he has experience in the entire construction process and can build his own home from clearing and excavating the raw land to installing that kitchen cabinet—which is exactly why he’s moved back to his birth state.
The community and culture of Vermont is where this Green Mountain boy’s heart lies. Being with family and being connected to the land are the reasons Zach and his now-wife, Nina (Mountain Top’s office manager who is always happy and available to assist) have returned home to apply their skills and passions to Mountain Top Excavation.
